Getting Around Toyota City — A Friendly Guide for Visitors

Just arrived in Toyota and not sure how to get around?

You’re not alone. Toyota is a car city — it’s home to a famous carmaker, and most locals drive. So if you don’t have a car, it can feel hard to know where to start.

The good news: you don’t need one. Central Toyota is easy to explore by train, bus and on foot. This guide walks you through everything, one step at a time.

Know your two stations 2つの駅

This is the part that confuses most newcomers. Central Toyota has two train stations with very similar names, run by two different railway companies. They’re only a few minutes apart on foot.

豊田市駅
Toyotashi Station
Meitetsu Railway

Go to Nagoya, Akaike and Chiryu

新豊田駅
Shin-Toyota Station
Aichi Loop Railway

Go to Okazaki, Mikawa-Toyota and Kozoji

Tip: Before you set off, double-check which station your train leaves from. Going to Nagoya? Head to Toyotashi Station (豊田市駅).

Taking the train 電車に乗る

There are two ways to pay. An IC card is the easiest.

With an IC card

manaca, TOICA, Suica and PASMO all work.

  1. Tap your card at the ticket gate.
  2. Take the correct train.
  3. Tap your card again when you leave.

With a paper ticket

  1. Find your destination on the fare map.
  2. Buy a ticket from the machine.
  3. Insert it at the entrance gate.
  4. Take it back out and keep it safe.
  5. Insert it again at your destination.
Tip: Some ticket machines have an English option — look for the “English” button on the screen.

Taking the bus バスに乗る

Toyota has local buses, including the Toyota Oiden Bus (とよたおいでんバス) and Meitetsu Bus. Buses in Japan may work differently from what you’re used to. On many Oiden Bus routes:

  1. Get on through the rear door.
  2. Take a numbered ticket or tap your IC card.
  3. Watch for your stop on the display or listen to the announcements.
  4. Press the stop button before your stop.
  5. Pay the fare or tap your IC card as you leave.
  6. Get off through the front door.
Good to know: Boarding and payment can be different on some services. If you’re unsure, follow the signs or the driver’s instructions.
Tip: Carry some coins and ¥1,000 notes. Some buses don’t give change automatically.

Let Google Maps do the planning ルートを調べる

Japanese timetables can be tricky to read. Google Maps usually shows everything in your phone’s language, including:

train and bus times, routes and transfers, platforms and bus stop locations, estimated fares, and walking directions.

How to use it

  1. Open Google Maps.
  2. Enter your destination.
  3. Tap Directions.
  4. Choose the public transport icon.
  5. Pick your route.
Tip: Check your trip home before you leave! Some local buses don’t run often, especially in rural areas.

Taking a taxi タクシーに乗る

Taxis are handy when your destination is far from a station or bus stop. You’ll find taxi stands near major stations, or you can book through a local taxi company or a supported app.
